How Soon You Can Start Trying After A Miscarriage

One in every five pregnancies ends in miscarriage, typically in the first trimester. For women under 35, the chance of having a miscarriage in any given pregnancy is about 15 percent. Rates rise as you age, up to 20-35 percent between ages 35 and 45 and as high as 50 percent for women over 45.

A miscarriage is a devastating experience, but you should not let it deter you from trying again. Many women who miscarry go on to have perfectly healthy babies (for instance: Queen Bey!).

After a majority of first miscarriages, you can immediately start trying again without any risks. It is a common myth that the chances of miscarrying are higher after the first miscarriage, but these have all been debunked. Research published in the British Medical Journal found that conceiving within six months after miscarriage offers the best chance of a healthy pregnancy. The study concluded, “Women who conceive within six months of an initial miscarriage have the best reproductive outcomes and lowest complication rates in a subsequent pregnancy."

Women who have suffered two miscarriages in a row, however, need to be careful. If you've had two miscarriages in a row, it is advised to fully investigate and address the reason behind the miscarriages before you try again.

Here are a few tips to follow when you are trying to conceive again after a miscarriage.

  • Take 400 mcg of folic acid daily.
  • Do not drink or smoke.
  • Eat a balanced diet devoid of high mercury fish, sodas, juices, and junk food.
  • Manage stress levels by exercising regularly.
  • Reduce exposure to chemicals usually found in home cleaning products, detergents etc.
