3 Out Of 4 Pregnant Women Face This Disorder

According to a new study conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, 3 out of 4 pregnant women experience an uncomfortable disorder - bowel movement issues which is just a polite way of saying that your poop habits are going to go out the window.

You are either going to be going too much or not at all (eeks!). From the data collected, the researchers drew the conclusion that bowel movement disorders were most common in the first trimester. If all that wasn't enough, Hemorrhoids are very common too and could cause your stools to become bloody.

So what's behind the tummy troubles? As with many other uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms, hormones are to blame here as well. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuations during pregnancy can lead to changes in bowel movements. In addition to hormonal changes, the bowel itself is physically displaced due to the growing fetus in the uterus causing you to go too much or not at all.

If you are plagued by constipation, here's what you can do to 'ease' your situation.

  • Drink plenty of water and prune juice to hydrate your system.
  • Consume at least 25 grams of fiber each day. This could include fruits, vegetables, and bran cereal.
  • Moderate exercise safe for pregnant women is always a good idea.
  • If you still are unable to go, consult your doctor for stool softeners. They'll help to get things, er, moving along. Good luck!
